Loveland Academy and Lokahi Montessori School share a campus and are under the same ownership.
Lokahi Montessori School, established in 1999 is a private school in Makiki serving typically developing and gifted/talented children and their families. It is highly academic in its emphasis and has a very low student to teacher ratio. It currently enrolls children ages 2 years through the sixth grade.
Lokahi Montessori School was founded by Dr. Patricia J Dukes, who has over 35 years of experience in the field of education and educational research. Lokahi's mission is to offer every child a Montessori education, which translates into experiential learning through a multi-sensory hands-on curriculum. Instruction is individualized and learning is accomplished in a nurturing and secure environment. Lokahi's educational standards are on the cutting edge, on par with the finest early education programs in the country. Instruction in the fine arts, by accomplished artists in residence, complements the traditional academic curriculum, is thematically based, and is skillfully interwoven into the curriculum. Character education rounds out the curriculum through its emphasis on nurturing the spirit by emphasizing basic values.
Lokahi Montessori School is an American Montessori Society affiliated school. The Hawaiian word "Lokahi" means "harmony" or "unity." It is consistent with Montessori's philosophy of education for peace. Lokahi strives to teach children tolerance for differences in others, as it provides peer models for children enrolled in Loveland Academy, its sister school for children who face learning challenges. Bilingual and non-English speaking children are welcome and cultural diversity is emphasized throughout all teaching. In short, children learn to respect differences in others and to become good citizens, hopefully making tomorrow's world a better place in which to live.
